Semi-formal is such a strange little category. It’s not black tie, so you’re not digging out a full ballgown, but “cocktail attire” alone doesn’t quite cut it either. The trick is leaning into fall’s color palette and letting the dress do the work.

I keep coming back to this one because it doesn’t try too hard. The sweetheart bodice folds into off-shoulder sleeves, and the skirt has enough volume to give the look some movement without taking over the whole outfit. Dusty blue against a stone terrace at sunset is genuinely one of my favorite color pairings this season.
2. Chartreuse Off-Shoulder Midi
Same bones as the dress above, completely different personality once you swap the color. Chartreuse isn’t a shade most people reach for on purpose, but the textured look makes it feel intentional rather than jarring. This is one for a wedding where you actually want to be spotted in photos.
3. Navy Halter Midi With Full Skirt
This dress idea has a bit of an old-Hollywood feel to it, that high halter neckline paired with a skirt that’s basically begging to twirl. What I love most is how versatile the styling feels. Swap the bag and shoes and this look could work for a rehearsal dinner, a holiday party, or honestly a nice date night.

Layers of ruffles fall across the shoulders before the skirt breaks into a dramatic high-low hem.
